BEYOND THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG…
THE REALITY OF BEING A PHYSICIAN OR SURGEON
IS MORE COMPLICATED THAN PRESUMED
Most people assume it takes hard work, dedication, and intelligence, yet the truth is far more complex and may be significantly different for each physician or surgeon.
Women and Underrepresented Minorities (URM/URiM) experience bias, microaggressions, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation and other forms of abuse of power disproportionately. Navigating these injustices is stressful and adds layers of complexity to an already demanding profession. Understanding the patterns associated with the abuse of power, unethical, and illegal practices in medicine and surgery is a crucial step toward achieving justice, equity, and safety for clinicians and patients.
