SERVICES
Physicians and Surgeons are vulnerable to career disruption or sabotage when upstanding and upholding their professional ethical duty to deliver optimal patient centered care.
Sometimes taking this position leads to conflict with institutional leadership that can escalate in a set of untoward events starting with being labelled a “disruptive physician” and ultimately culminating in retaliation and termination for being a whistleblower.
This scenario happens more than we know because of legal intervention that includes signing a nondisclosure agreement. When leadership at healthcare institutions don’t listen to the highly educated and extremely committed medical staff and default to institutional complacency that condones unethical and/or illegal practices the result is loss of ethical talent from the medical and surgical workforce.
A physician or surgeon should never fear job loss when advocating for evidence based ethical patient centered care. As a nation we are confronting a national physician and surgeon workforce shortage. Loss of talented and committed women and under-represented minorities from the workforce will only perpetuate healthcare disparities and suboptimal patient care.
"Time after time institutions show talented physicians and surgeons the door rather than address structural racism and sexism within their workplace."
- Pringl Miller, MD FACS
